Maria Elena Garcia, 80, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2017, at Clear Lake Hospital in Texas, after battling with pneumonia. She was the daughter of Jessie and Maria de Jesus Salazar Garcia. She was survived by her siblings Rodolfo Garcia, Carmen Rabel and Margaret Notter. Maria Elena was born by chance in Mexico. Her mother, Maria de Jesus, pregnant with Maria Elena was visiting relatives in Mexico when she lost her purse and all her documentation. While the issue was resolved, Maria Elena was born away from home and thus became a Mexican Citizen. Maria Elena became a naturalized citizen of the United States on May 1, 1968. She lived her entire life in Alvin, TX with her parents, and in the later part of her life, with her sister Sara. At an early age of about 12, Maria Elena was struck by mental illness with which she battled her whole life. Sara, her sister, promised their father to care for Maria Elena for the remainder of her life. This was a promise that Sara kept to the best of her ability. Ironically when Maria Elena had to move to a nursing home after a knee injury from which she never recovered, Maria Elena’s biggest concern was that she could no longer care for her sister Sara. The truth was they took care of one another.
