Donald Ray Smith

Donald Ray Smith, “Don”, 74, born January 28, 1947, and longtime resident of Alvin, Texas, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on August 3, 2021, following a brief illness.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Newman and Gertrude Smith. He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Joy Smith; brother Malcolm Smith and wife Jean; nephew Chad Smith; children Tina D’Astoli and husband Gene, Sharla Pointer and husband Johnny, and stepson Len Groce and wife Erin.

Doting grandfather to his grandchildren Amber Rodgers-Mendez and husband Jeff Rodgers, Michael D’Astoli, Avery D’Astoli, Dane Johnson, Jazlyn Pointer, Kylee Pointer, Jace Pointer, Everett Groce, and great-grandchildren Caleb Mendez, Roman Rodgers, and Valentina Rodgers, Don was affectionately known as “Papa”.

Don especially loved being with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He could often be found at one of their various events cheering them on and always supporting them. When he wasn’t at an event, you could always find him watching his beloved Astros, as he rarely missed a game.

A memorial service for Don is planned for Wednesday, August 11, 2021. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. with service to begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Froberg Funeral Home at Oak Park, 300 Oak Park Drive, Alvin Texas 77511.
