Helga Zimmermann Free, 79, of Alvin, Texas, passed away in the HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake Heart Tower on Sunday, August 30, 2020. Helga was born in Warsaw, Poland on August 4, 1941 to the late Paul and Hildegard Zimmermann. Her father, Paul, served in the German military, and Helga was raised in Karlsruhe, Germany with six other siblings, of whom all she outlived.
Helga moved to the United States in 1962 with her late husband, Marvin E. Free, Sr., as he served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962.
Marvin and Helga were both residents of Alvin, Texas, owning and operating Alvin Cab Company following the late Auty Elvis Free, Helga’s father-in-law. Alvin Cab Company was in service from 1940 until 2000.
Some of Helga’s hobbies included playing cards and dominoes with her best friends, playing bingo at the VFW hall, and cooking German food for her family and friends.
Helga was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 39 years; and her son-in-law, Martin A. Sturm.
Helga leaves behind four children: Michael T. Baumann and wife Mary, Marvin E. Free, Jr. and wife Mara, Diana L. Sturm (widow), and Pamela J. Wallace and husband Billy; nine grandchildren: Robert “Anthony” S. Loredo, JoAnna M. Canales and husband David, Melissa R. Brown and husband Joel, Joshua C. Sturm, Brandon L. Sturm and wife Sarah, Kirrina S. Higginbotham and husband Bryan, Marvin E. Free III and wife Tiffany, John W. Free, and Brooke E. Lunz; and seventeen great grandchildren: Jasmine, Adrian, Hailey, AJ, Isabella, Marcos, David, Micah, Michael, MJ, Brinlynn, Sara, Jaxson, Teagan, Jacob, Ember, and Sage. Helga also leaves behind a host of relatives in both Germany and the United States who love and will miss her.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2020 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Faith Family Fellowship located at 1031 W. Sealy St. Alvin, Texas 77511.
