James Currie Obituary

James C Currie (JC) of Alvin, TX died on July 12, 2022 at 90 years of age.

Mr. Currie was born in Fisher County, Texas on August 7, 1931 to James Cortus Currie and Pearl Velma Moss Currie in his grandparent’s home on a farm four miles east of McCaulley, Texas.  James was blessed to have two wonderful wives in his life.  He married Dolores Julia Rainey on October 2, 1959 in Jackson, Mississippi and they had a loving marriage for 41 years.  They had two children, Alan and Linda.  Following Dolores’ death on September 15, 2001, James married Charlotte Gordon on April 22, 2002 and they had 20 happy years together.

JC was a wonderful father and every summer he and Dolores took the family on many driving and camping trips to Parks and Campgrounds across the United States and Canada.  Alan and Linda have many stories of camping in Key West, Big Bend, Ouachita Mountains in Arkansas at Shady Lake and several trips to Canada of which Lake Louise was a highlight.

Mr. Currie had a love for navigation as evidenced in his career choices with the U.S. Air Force and later with NASA.  James served in the Air Force from 1954-1958 and he often reminisced about this time in the UK and France supporting Strategic Air Command and Air Material Command.  James had two degrees in Mathematics from Texas Tech University and was a proud supporter of the Red Raiders for over 70 years.   James worked for NASA in Houston beginning in 1966 in the Mission Planning and Analysis Division in Ground Navigation for many of NASA’s early missions including Mercury, Gemini and Apollo.  James was a part of the NASA team that first put man on the moon on July 21, 1969 and brought them back safely.  Following his retirement from NASA in 1993, JC and Dolores took the trip of a lifetime to England.  Sadly, this would be the last trip Dolores would take.  Later, he and Charlotte were able to take many wonderful trips all over the world including China, Japan, England, Spain, and France.  James logged all of these trips into his “geographic coordinates notebook.”

Mr. Currie is survived by his spouse, Charlotte Currie, sister Jimmie Lee Currie, son, Alan Currie and his wife Deborah Currie, daughter Linda Currie, and granddaughter Amanda Thompson and her husband Shawn Thompson.  Mr. Currie was blessed to increase his family size upon his marriage to Charlotte and he greatly enjoyed spending time with their four grandchildren, Anna Lee Gordon, Rachel Gordon, David R. Gordon and Pierce Gordon.  James and Charlotte are long time members of Westbury Baptist Church and many members are very good friends.

The service will take place on July 19 at Froberg Funeral Home at Oak Park, 300 Oak Park Drive, Alvin, Texas at 10 am.  Friends and family may come as early as 9 am for visitation ahead of the service.  Mr. Currie will be buried at Oak Park Cemetery in Alvin.
