James Arther Means peacefully left this earth with family by his side on Friday March 1, 2024 at the age of 85 years. He was born on January 29, 1939 the oldest son of Hazel
(Garner) and John Andrew Means. He was lovingly referred to as “Cotton” by many family and friends.
He attended El Campo High School and was raised on a small ranch in the Round Mott community. He met and later married Pamela (Adams) on July 21, 1962. She preceded him in death by 8 days.
He took pride in his work ethic: was an Army veteran, rancher, skilled carpenter and retired from Dow Chemical’s Union Carbide plant. His dry sense of humor allowed him to keep a straight face while playing practical jokes but was easy to smile otherwise. He loved taking family and friends fishing and hunting and watching his “freeloading” deer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Joe Lee Means and a multitude of family and lifelong friends. He is survived by his loving family: niece Chelleye (Means) Block and husband, Wayne of Hobson; nephew Allen Adams and wife Susie of ???; niece Vicke (Adams) Tupa and husband Mark of Pearland; Karen (Knight) Armstrong and husband, Robert of Webster; Frankie Knight and wife, Deanna of Bayou Vista; and many other family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Parkinson’s Foundation or the Fannin Volunteer Fire Department.
