Robert Wendel left the pain of this world on June 23, 2022 to join his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ gently while surrounded by his family at his home.
Robert is survived by the love of his life, Bonnie Dawson Wendel of more than 69 years. His beloved children, Anthony and Sandra Wendel, Vicki and Larry Dore' and Cynthia and Nick Jensen. His precious grandchildren Amy Wendel Smith and Stacy Smith, Timothy Taylor and Stephanie Taylor, Samantha Taylor, Zachary Dore' and Amy Shriver, Ashley and Robert Aguilar, Jeremy Dore', and Lauren Coffman. His treasured great-grandchildren Justin Green, Robert Green, Graham Taylor, Kennerly Taylor, Hayden Taylor, Jason Burell, Sean Burell, Marcus Aguilar, and Lucia Aguilar. Robert was preceded in death by his parents Frank Wendel and Katy Slater Wendel as well as his numerous loving brothers and sisters.
Robert while raised the majority of his early years in Cayuga, TX was born in the town of Cross Roads, TX. A name befitting the nature of a man that loved his family, country, and God. He had strong opinions, strong convictions and the willingness to back all of that up with commitment. His commitment to this country drove him to enlist in the Navy at the age of 17. This commitment was only overshadowed by his commitment to his family which led to an early release and an Honorable Discharge in 1950. In 1951 while still helping his family by working at Philips Petroleum, he was transferred to Alvin, TX. It was at this crossroad that led him to what he considered his greatest gift. After a month long whirl wind courtship, Miss Bonnie Dawson, became his bride. Together they worked on building a family and becoming involved in the community. Robert and his wife along with their children owned and operated the full service Hancock Station, and later owned the Lion station and Wendel's Tool Rental. The tool rental served the community in three different locations over the span of 50 years. Even with the reputation of a straight shooting business man, he never lost sight of family. While raising a family, he wanted them to be proud of this country he loved. Robert and Bonnie have visited every state in these United States. Some he experienced while participating in shooting competitions where he ranked 4th in the nation with his rifle/target shooting. As with everything, he didn't take his shooting skills lightly and shared his love and talents by teaching hunter safety at Alvin Community College. His talents where not limited to building a business or as a learned sportsman, he was also an artist. His skills at building something beautiful from a piece of wood will live on in his wagons, rocking horses and famous Martin bird houses.
Robert never quit working even when he retired. The crossroad he chose was to deepen his walk with Jesus. He was an avid reader of the Bible and his love for Christ deepened as he aged. He believed that sharing God's word of salvation was not only his job but was committed to trying to widen the range of people he could reach by writing a book on his love for God.
As you join the Wendel's in celebrating the patriarch of their family, we ask that in lieu of flowers you give to causes that meant so much to him, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or American Cancer Society.
Pallbearers: Zachary Dore', Ashley Aguilar, Justin Green, Robert Green, Lauren Coffman, Timothy Taylor.
